Guang Ming is a civic leader, speaker, author, and advocate for building strong communities. After eight years in public office, including two years of service as Mayor Pro Tempore of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, she now works in business development by day and writes by night. Her works, both fiction and nonfiction, bridge policy, culture, and lived experience to reimagine how we support one another. Her TEDx talk focuses on how the ancient tradition of Chinese postpartum recovery can inform modern American maternal care.
Guang Ming earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. She taught in the department of Law, Letters, & Society at the University of Chicago, then practiced intellectual property law with O'Melveny. She later took on the role of COO of the Whitley Household, managing the lives of her 4 children. When the children were all in elementary school, Guang Ming ran for office and was elected to Town Council in Mount Pleasant. She served two terms before retiring. In recent years, Guang Ming served as a tenure-track professor at Charleston School of Law before being recruited to rejoin O'Melveny as a business development manager. Guang Ming is also a Liberty Fellow and part of the Aspen Institute's Global Leadership Network.
